The night air is chill and dark, and while the glow of torches and candle lights had offered some initial promise when you first crested that hill and spied this town nestled on the coast, now that you were here, the deserted streets seemed deserted, unfriendly and unwelcoming. There is little help for it, however; your need for food and lodging drives you onward.
And then you see it: the windows are aglow with the dancing silhouettes and shadows of many people moving about inside the lower story of the inn, framed in a golden glow of light and what must surely be the warmth of a good fire.
A kind-faced woman welcomes you from the bar with a smile as warm as the fires in the fireplaces, and with a gesture she beckons you to her at an empty spot at the counter.
“Welcome, traveler! Pull up a stool and give your feet a rest! Looks like you could use it! Where have you journeyed from? It’s a huge world out there, and we get folks from all over…”
